Morocco Hykayat

Reviving Moroccan Tales & Cultural Heritage

Our Mission

❤️

Morocco Hykayat offers a growing collection of Moroccan folktales, legends, and original stories written and adapted for modern readers. Stories are available in Arabic, English, and Tamazight to make Morocco’s storytelling heritage accessible to learners and readers around the world.

Morocco Hykayat is a digital sanctuary for Moroccan storytelling — a home for the timeless oral traditions of our grandmothers, storytellers (halaqis), and village elders. Our mission is to preserve, celebrate, and pass on Morocco's cultural memory through legends, fables, wisdom tales, and humorous anecdotes.

Some stories on Morocco Hykayat are original works written for this platform, while others are adapted from Morocco’s rich oral storytelling tradition. These stories are shared for educational, cultural, and literary purposes to preserve and celebrate Morocco’s narrative heritage.

Oral Heritage

Moroccan storytelling has been passed down orally for centuries — from grandparents to grandchildren, in village squares, homes, and through halqa circles in places like Jemaa El-Fna in Marrakech. These stories carry history, values, wisdom, and the soul of Morocco.

Today, many of these tales are at risk of disappearing as elders pass away and oral traditions fade. Morocco Hykayat preserves this rich cultural heritage by collecting, adapting, and sharing stories in Arabic, English, and Tamazight.

You can help keep Moroccan oral traditions alive. If you know a tale told by your parents, grandparents, or local storytellers, share it with us through our Submit a Story page and become part of preserving Morocco’s narrative legacy.

What is Hikayat?

Traditional Storyteller
"

"Hikayat" (حكايات)

means "stories" in Arabic — more than entertainment, it's a living bridge between generations. In Jemaa El-Fna square in Marrakech or around a fire in the Sahara, storytelling has always been how we shared history, values, identity, and spirit.

"Every story carries the wisdom of our ancestors, the dreams of our people, and the soul of Morocco."

Our Vision

We dream of a Morocco where every child hears the voice of their ancestors in stories. A Morocco where storytelling is not forgotten, but reborn — in classrooms, festivals, and on screens around the world. Together with families, storytellers, and communities, we aim to keep these tales alive, connecting past wisdom with the hearts of today’s youth.
